Champions League: Bayern to be outdone by PSG

PSG and Bayern Munich will both be hoping to deliver the first blow in the Champions League group stages when they meet in Paris this evening.

The French side dropped their first points of the season at the weekend when they were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Montpellier, but the real focus was on world record signing Neymar’s absence – however, his reported minor foot injury has healed and he will be in contention for tonight’s Champions League showdown.

The prospect of coming up against Neymar and Edison Cavani is enough to make even the world’s best defences quake and Bayern will have to have some serious wits about them this evening.

PSG have looked very impressive this season, winning eight of their nine competitive matches and opening their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 hammering of Celtic earlier this month. It was of course Neymar who netted first in that game too, and with five goals in six appearances for PSG it’s hard to choose anyone else to put money for this clash.

But the opponents have Robert Lewandowski. The Polish superstar has been in typically punishing form this season with eight goals in seven appearances for Bayern. He is responsible for half of Bayern’s league goals this campaign and scored 30 last season. He also netted eight in just nine Champions League outings, leading me to think that there won’t be any clean sheets in this evening’s game.

The Bundesliga champions’ away record in Europe’s elite competition isn’t the best either. They have lost four of their last six trips away in the competition, including a shock defeat at at Rostov. They are also missingcaptain Manuel Neuer and are without David Alaba, Thiago, and Arjen Robben.
