The second-leg of the Champions League qualifying play-off takes place at Anfield tonight as Liverpool welcome Hoffenheim, with the German side hoping to overturn the 2-1 deficit.
Liverpool’s 1st-leg victory took some of the shine off Julian Nagelsmann’s unbeaten home league record from last season and this, their inaugural Champions League appearance, is still very much an opportunity to test their mettle on the European stage.
With all due respect, I did not expect much of Hoffenheim and feel they have done well to make this stage. To add some recent historical perspective to the fixture, Liverpool were on their way to eventual Champions League glory in 2005 while Hoffenheim were scrambling up what is now Germany’s fourth tier of football.
The Reds have failed to emulate such heights since – but they will go into this game after a good summer of football and four points from their first two league games.

All is not lost going into tonight’s game but they have conceded two away goals already, which could prove fatal against a team who have the confidence of a solid start to their league campaign.
After having played just two Premier League games Liverpool have recorded four goals, with three different players finding the net and Sadio Mane on hot form boasting a 100% scoring record this season.
Although they are still without the estranged Phillipe Coutinho, Jurgen Klopp will be feeling confident about tonight’s game in front of the Anfield faithful – a tough atmosphere for any club to be faced with.
