Champions League: Salzburg signal end of the road for Hibernians

The Maltese Premier League champions come up against the Austrian title holders in tonight’s Champions League qualifier match between Hibernians and FC Red Bull Salzburg.

Hibernians made it through the first round of qualifiers with a win over Estonian side Infonet Tallinn, but this task will be infinitely more demanding.

The Maltese side have only featured in the qualifiers four times, reaching this second just round once before which, incidentally, is the furthest they have ever progressed in the competition.

Salzburg, on the other hand, won their 11th Austrian Football Bundesliga by an impressive 18 points last season, with a goal difference of +50 and look set to continue in Europe’s top tournament..

They are, to an extent, used to playing teams who fail to provide a challenge within their domestic league and I think tonight’s match will be a similar story.

This game could be quite the whitewash in favour of the Austrians, who may well even utilise the fixture to run out new and young players.

I’m backing Red Bull Salzburg to progress at 1.18 with
