Athletic Bilbao v Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid will be looking to prolong their unbeaten start to the season on Wednesday when they travel to San Mames to face an Athletic Bilbao outfit who suffered their first loss of the campaign last time out.
The Basques gave a goal away late in the match at Las Palmas and lost 1-0 – a fair result, given Athletic’s uninspiring display in Gran Canaria.
The Bilbao side, however, are generally much tougher at their home ground and last season only Barcelona and Real Madrid were able to come away with a win at San Mames and, even then, they were both only by a single goal.
Athletic are establishing a strong home record but Atletico’s away form is perhaps even more notable, with the side from Madrid undefeated on the road since December last year, equating to a run of 14 matches.
Of those 14 games, nine have produced less than 2.5 goals, with Atleti expertness at keeping things tight on the road, but to potentially get a better return, it could be more lucrative to back a goalless first-half.
This bet has paid out in each of Atletico’s last three matches, and in the four competitive matches they have played on the road this term, Los Rojiblancos have only scored in the first half of one of those encounters.
So with the hosts solid at home and the guests formidable on the road, they could well cancel each other out for at least the opening 45 minutes but ultimately my money is on Atletico for the victory at 2.29 with Sportsbet.io
