Wimbledon: Konta could be on her way to SW19 final

The Wimbledon semi-final encounter between Venus Williams and Johanna Konta on Thursday is set to be a thrilling one, with the Brit in good stead to emulate Virginia Wade’s triumph of 1977.

Konta was ranked outside the top 200 just five years ago at a time where opponent Williams was clinching her third Wimbledon title.

Fast-forward half a decade and Konta is now the highest-ranked female left in the competition and comes out on top in the head-to-heads against the remaining three competitors.

But it is Williams that she faces now.

The pair have faced-off five times before, with Konta leading the battle 3-2, despite Williams winning the most recent encounter in May of this year.

Hungarian-born Konta is 11 years her opponent’s junior and knows from her performances so far that she possesses the tenacity to see off challenging matches, with three of her five meetings at this year’s tournament going to three sets.

Konta also demonstrated that she has the resilience to bounce back from a losing position after going behind for the first time this competition, in a test of nerves against Simona Halep last time out.

Williams reached this stage of the competition last year for the first time since 2009 and is definitely on form – but so is Konta.

The 26-year-old will be playing in front of a home crowd and has the extra incentive of knowing that she is just two matches away from being the first British woman to win the prestigious SW19 grand slam in 40 years.

This clash will be an intense one, and could well go to three sets, but my money is on Konta to win at 1.80 with Sportsbet.io
