Latest news in the NFL

The NFL regular season is coming to an end. With the playoffs looming, is there anything that has been going on that can swing things towards a surprise? There are just four weeks left, so there is still plenty of time for something special to crop up.

Will the Dallas Cowboys be able to turn things around? There are 26 out of the 32 teams in the NFL that can still make the playoffs, mathematically speaking. This means that there are still a lot of changes that can happen between now and the start of the playoffs.

What news has been at the forefront of our minds this week?

The Cowboys lose again to make the NFC East division the worst in the NFL

You only have to look at the standings in the NFC East to know that it is a weak division. The Cowboys sit on top of the rankings with a win-loss record of 6-7. Just let that sink in a little bit: the team at the top of the standings have a losing record. It is no surprise really – this is a division that contains the New York Giants, who are currently on an eight-game losing streak; the Washington Redskins, who are on a two-game winning streak but before that had won just once all season; and the Philadelphia Eagles, who will be able to draw level with the Cowboys if they win their game in hand. They are also on a three-game losing streak though, so winning that game in hand does not look likely.

It is an extremely strange situation. Jason Garrett is under great pressure as head coach of the Cowboys, yet he has them in first place in the division. Perhaps part of this is that the upper management for the Cowboys have unequivocally backed Garrett as being safe from being fired. This has caused the media to whip up a storm around him. They are starting to call for him to be fired, which will start to build the pressure.

A lot of this stems from the belief that Garrett is not getting the most out of the roster that he has available. Many believe that it is one of the strongest rosters that the Cowboys have had for a long time, yet Garrett is not getting the most from them. He is also widely believed to be tactically naive.

It is more than just this season – over the last five seasons, the Cowboys have managed to overturn a half-time deficit just four times. This definitely backs up the theories that Garrett cannot compete on a tactical level with his peers. His inability to change a game, or to counter-attack changes that his opponents make mid-game, show up his lack of knowledge when it comes to tactics. While it is admirable of Jerry Jones to stand by his man, it could also be time to bring in a head coach who is capable of utilising the quality of the Cowboys roster to its full potential.

If you think that the Cowboys can turn things around and hold onto their position at the pinnacle of the NFC East, then a trip to Sportsbet is the way to back it up. With odds of 1.80 available, they are currently the outright favourites to win the division.

Who can still make the playoffs?

Currently, the Redskins are the most outside of outside challengers to make the playoffs. With their current streak of two wins, they are the only team in the NFC East on a winning run. However, this is likely to be too much for them to make the playoffs in the end, and it is safe to say that the Redskins are out of contention, despite it still mathematically being a possibility. Who is still in with a chance of providing an upset and stealing a playoff place?

The Cowboys are on an extremely bad run right now, but the playoffs should still be within reach for them, even after their loss to the Chicago Bears recently. As the likely winners of the NFC East, they will automatically be put through – however, they are unlikely to be seeded high and will not get byes.

The Tennessee Titans are well in with a shout of making the playoffs, though injuries to key members of their defensive roster have cost them a little this season. If they can get through the final few games and sneak a result, then they could be making the playoffs.

The Green Bay Packers are a strange team. Matt LaFleur has revitalised the side and turned them into genuine playoff candidates. However, at the same time, they seem to display a soft underbelly whenever they play away from home. While they look like making the playoffs, this weakness without home advantage could be what costs them from going far in the playoffs.

Finally, the Minnesota Vikings look like they could push through this season as long as they are able to keep their first string fit. Whether they will go far is a completely different question though.
