Why Matthew Stafford's debut should encourage Rams fans
Matthew Stafford led the Los Angeles Rams to a resounding victory in their first match of the 2021-22 NFL season against the Chicago Bears. Stafford’s debut should encourage the fans because he is the real deal and he lives up to the hype.
Stafford was under immense pressure to perform at a high level for the Rams. The fans were hyping him up as the next great NFL quarterback. He was under pressure because LA traded QB Jared Goff alongside three draft picks for the 13-year veteran and he delivered in his first game for the Rams.
Stafford was not worried about the pressure because the only people he was concerned about were his family. This was a stellar performance because he threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Rams to their first win of the season at SoFi Stadium. People should not be surprised because Stafford is an established star back with the Detroit Lions and he’s extra motivated.
It was a perfect debut for Stafford
Stafford impressed everyone with his stellar performance. It was an amazing game for the former Lion but if you know Stafford, you should know that he’s still looking at some of the mistakes he made during the game. While they weren’t obvious for the fans, Stafford wants to perform at the maximum level.
A perfect passer rating is 158.3 and Stafford came close with a career-high of 156.1. This season is an exciting one for Rams fans because Stafford might be the key to further success. They would’ve loved to keep the draft picks but current results matter more than an unclear long-term future.
The stats back up the fans’ feelings about the debut. It was a perfect performance but Rams fans should not expect this to happen every game. Stafford is not superhuman but he does want to keep this up to stay in the conversation for both the playoffs and a possible awards race.
Everything is going according to plan
Stafford was amazing with how he orchestrated the Rams’ offence. He fits in well with the schemes which is perfect for coach Sean McVay’s system. It was a special performance from the veteran QB and he looked like a rejuvenated star with his new team. He struggled at times with the Lions but his time with the Rams has gotten off to a flying start.
McVay was impressed with the debut game. He knew that Stafford was a great QB but this was an unreal performance from the 33-year-old.
McVay said, ‘You could just see there was a look in his eye. He had confidence in his teammates, he expected to play well, and he did a great job. He’s gifted. He’s got a great ability to be able to change his arm slot and make all types of throws, whether it be short, intermediate, or down the field. But you’re not limited in anything you can do with him in the pass game’.
Stafford is happy with his place in the system. Everything is going according to plan because the coaches believed in Stafford as the centrepiece of their offence. It was just one game but the signs are there and it is looking up for the Rams and their eager fans for the rest of the season.
