Pete Alonso believes he's baseball's best power hitter
Pete Alonso managed to come back from a tough situation during the Home Run Derby. He didn’t show discomfort as he settled into the batter’s box and hit five HRs at the end to secure the trophy. After the win, he talked about how he believes he’s the MLB’s best power hitter.
Pete managed to beat Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini in the finals to win his second HR Derby. This was a star-studded Derby because Juan Soto, Shohei Ohtani, and many more participated in the event. However, it was Pete who came out victorious to prove he’s still the best.
During his post-game pressure, Pete talked about how he sees himself compared to the other top batters and how much this event means to him.
‘I think I'm the best power hitter on the planet’, Pete said. ‘Being able to showcase that, and really putting on a fun display for fans, I just think it's a dream come true for me because when I was young, my parents let me stay up past my bedtime to watch this. That was one of the few nights per year I actually got to stay up past my bedtime, just watch incredible feats that you don't see in a regular baseball game’.
This event was also a star run for Mancini who is still fresh out of recovery from cancer back in 2020. He had to undergo a program to get rid of the illness and he managed to make a full recovery. He’s now back competing in one of the biggest events for individual players.
This was Alonso’s second straight title which has only been done twice before. Both Ken Griffey Jr. and Yoenis Cespedes won twice in a row back in their primes. Pete was in disbelief when he won it but he still sees it as a blessing.
Now, the challenge for Pete is to replicate this for the rest of the season. The New York Mets are in the midst of a good season but their fans want them to compete for more. This is a good accolade for Pete and it’ll build confidence for him to play better in the last stretch of the regular season.
