Why the SD Padres decided to fire head coach Jayce Tingler
After the San Diego Padres’ collapse late into the 2021 MLB season, head coach Jayce Tingler was removed from his post. This is probably a move to refresh the team after a disastrous campaign. They were a favourite to win the World Series but they missed out on the playoffs.
In the preseason, the Padres were discussed as the favourites alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was a disappointing development for the Padres because Tingler was fresh off a second-place finish in the Manager of the Year race in 2020. Just a year later, he was removed from his post after a horrible season.
August and September 2021 was a horrible stretch for the Padres as they lost 34 of their last 46 games. They finished the season with a 79-83 record which was 11 games out of the National League’s second wild-card playoff spot. Losing that amount of games in a short period of time is grounds for removal and that was what the Padres did to Tingler.
The change was necessary for the Padres to grow
Tingler joined the Padres back in 2019 and he accomplished so much in his two seasons with the Padres. General manager A.J. Preller wrote a statement that addressed Tingler’s dismissal.
He wrote, ‘Jayce accomplished a great deal in his two seasons with the Padres, leading our team through an unprecedented pandemic and into the postseason for the first time in 15 years. I have tremendous respect for him as a coach, colleague and friend. After much thought and consideration over the last several weeks, we felt a change was necessary at this time to ultimately reach our championship potential in San Diego’.
Preller’s line of reasoning is key to making this decision because Tingler did disappoint as the coach, especially in the final stretch. Their stretch of losses in his final month was a horrible way to go out but it was the sign that Preller and the Padres front office needed to signal the end. Tingler will be remembered as the coach that helped end the playoff drought but the Padres are ready for greater success soon.
Tingler still sees a bright future for the Padres
This was Tingler’s first managerial job in the MLB. You can expect him to return to the MLB sometime soon because he has the potential to become a top-level manager with a better team in the future. However, the Padres want to win now and Tingler is inexperienced to guide them to victory again.
Tingler is disappointed with how the season played out but he knows that the Padres are filled with superstar talents like Manny Machado and Fernando Tatís Jr. They need to compete against the top teams and a coach might be the catalyst that they need to reach the upper echelon.
