Tobey opens up about Slovenia's run
Mike Tobey is more than pleased with Slovenia’s success as they have booked their tickets for the Tokyo Games. The team has thrived and proved that they can go against the best teams in the competition. Tobey is proud of the way they have won their games.
No one expected Slovenia to get a shot at the gold medal this year. Perhaps Luka Doncic’s antics ensured their ticket to the contest and had paved the way to a huge run that the team will never forget.
By the time Tobey and the boys have won their shot at the Tokyo Games, his family bought a Slovenian flag and hung it outside of their house. Tobey said it was going to stay there for their whole run in Tokyo.
Two weeks from now, Mike is set to take his place as an Olympian in Tokyo. He averaged 15 points and 7.6 boards to help Luka get the best of their games and push their way into the top of the qualifiers.
That was the first time that Slovenia has reached the Games in their history. Mike was second in both scoring and the boards just next to the young Doncic. While they only had a few weeks together as a squad, Tobey said they bonded well and proved that they can step up in the games.
‘I think it just speaks of the volumes of how great of a player he (Luka Doncic) is. He’s one of the best players in the world’, Tobey said. ‘I just kind of came in and played the pick n’ roll with him. I just tried to do whatever they need me to do in every offensive situation. Roll, go through the pop and just try to play through there. Make the read out of what he’s doing. I give him all the credit for all the chemistry that we were able to get right away’.
Tobey knows that they still have a long way to go in the Tokyo Games. Slovenia is ready to take on the big games soon, and they are not going to back down from the big task at hand.
