Zaragoza parts ways with veteran big man Jamel McLean

Jamel McLean has been in Europe for a decade now after going undrafted back in the 2011 NBA Draft. Now, he has been cut by his latest team, Casademont Zaragoza. Unfortunately, McLean has parted ways with the team because he looked promising during his short spell.

Before he parted ways with the team, McLean was averaging nine points and four rebounds across six Liga Endesa games. He was playing 16 minutes per game which was a solid amount for a veteran big man. His best performance has to be the game against Lenovo Tenerife when he scored 17 points and grabbed seven boards.

Unfortunately, McLean was injured in their game in Israel. That was one of the biggest reasons why he’s not on the team anymore. McLean has had solid years in Europe, especially during the 2015 season when he was an MVP in the Bundesliga for Alba Berlin.

The club parted ways with McLean and they released a statement addressing the exit. They wrote, ‘From Casademont Zaragoza, we want to thank the professionalism and predisposition shown by the player at all times, while we wish him luck in his next professional stage’.

It was a simple message but it hit all of the points that you typically see from a team when they’re parting ways with a player. They did not talk about the reason behind his release but most Spanish basketball fans have inferred that it was due to the high expectations set upon McLean on his arrival.

He was seen as a top big man in Europe but he was dealing with an injury that hampered his performance. The sprained ankle was an issue for McLean as he couldn’t move around properly and he was struggling to keep up in the paint with other mobile big men in Spain.

Now, McLean’s status is up in the air but you should expect him to land on his feet soon. He is a hot commodity even at 33 years of age. An energetic big man is what teams need in Europe. It did not work out at Zaragoza but McLean is the type of player to keep fighting no matter what.
