Heroic ends their IEM Cologne run tied at 7th-8th place
Despite their motivation to make it far in the tournament, Heroic was bounced out of IEM Cologne in the group stages by FaZe Clan in Group B’s lower bracket final. It was a full three-game series but FaZe’s 16-10 victory in Ancient decided the outcome.
Before the event, Heroic was tapped as a dark horse to win the event. Their players wanted to prove the doubters wrong but they have to settle for a 7th-8th place finish alongside BIG. Heroic was ranked 4th in the world rankings before the event which means this is a disappointing result for a squad that had a good chance of winning the trophy.
Heroic captain Casper ‘cadiaN’ Møller spoke before the event and said they wanted to win this trophy since he sees it as one of the most prestigious in CS:GO esports. He said, ‘We're ready to be here, not only to learn game by game but to make sure that we can hit the level that people have seen throughout the last one and a half years’.
It’s a disappointing ending for Heroic since they expected more from themselves. However, they fought hard to stay in IEM Cologne but FaZe was too much for them to control during the best-of-three series.
FaZe advanced to the quarter-finals where they will face Gambit for a chance to face Natus Vincere in the semis. On the other side of the bracket, Astralis will start their playoff run by playing against Virtus.Pro. The winner of that matchup will face the surging G2 in the semis.
After the match, cadiaN showed his disappointment about the result. On his Twitter page, he wrote, ‘7-8th at IEM. Not the best LAN debut, not the worst. Still very disappointed’.
This was the first LAN event for Heroic’s lineup and they had big expectations of themselves. However, they struggled to win in maps like Ancient and Mirage which proved to be their undoing.
Despite Heroic’s exit, the rest of the event still looks good with teams like Na’Vi and G2 alive. This will be a big win for any team since Cologne events usually set the tone for the rest of the season.
