Why RpK's retirement is massive for the French CS:GO scene
The French Counter-Strike: Global Offensive scene was shaken up back in June 2021 when Nathan ‘NBK-’ Schmitt switched games. Now, another French legend has stepped away with Cédric ‘RpK’ Guipouy’s retirement from professional CS:GO.
At 32 years of age, RpK was one of the elder statesmen in the CS:GO scene. There are still some veterans of the scene but they have all stepped away from the game. RpK was one of the last players of a dying breed and he has now followed suit. The French scene is one of the most prolific CS:GO communities in the world largely due to the quality of players that they have brought out.
RpK was one of those stellar talents that came from an older generation of French CS. He started with Counter Strike: Source and he quickly became one of the best players from that game. He made the move to CS:GO and he quickly became one of the pillars of the French scene. He ended his career without a Valve Major but he had many accolades under his belt.
RpK’s retirement was a long time coming
Most long-time CS:GO fans know that RpK was supposed to leave the scene back in 2018 when he was kicked from Team Envy. However, Team Vitality came knocking which boosted his career again. Vitality breathed new life into his career and it was successful for him because he got to play with top players.
His time with the team ended in April 2021, when he stepped down from the active roster. He had a few months to come up with a decision and he ended up with no choice but to retire. RpK had a stellar career and he earned a lot of money during his playing days. However, he was not the top player he once was and he didn’t love the game enough to stay in the scene.
RpK wrote, ‘Today marks the end of a long & beautiful career. It started long ago, had ups & downs, but I always loved it. I'm grateful for your support over the years, I won't forget it’.
RpK ended his career as a happy man
RpK was never the star he once was in Source during his time in CS:GO but he was a stable presence. When a team needed someone to step up, RpK was always there to help French teams as the glue guy. You can see teams like Envy, Titan, Vitality and many more who recruited RpK to their squads.
At the end of the day, RpK is pleased with what he did during his CS career. He said, ‘Honestly, I’m quite happy with my career. Despite some difficult moments, I kept fighting, and I was always focused on what I had to do. To be honest, I could have continued to try to win a Major. I would have liked to have won one. That would have been the cherry on top of the cake’.
Since he has stepped away from the game, RpK is headed to a career in the automobile industry. It has been a dream of his for a long time and he is now pursuing it. Despite his desire to step away, he isn’t counting out a return to the scene because he has already done this before back in 2014. At the end of the day, RpK had a legendary career and he will be remembered well.
