India vs West Indies: Twists and turns to expect from the 1st T20I

Sportsbet.io discusses in brief the situations that will have a twist-and-turn effect in India’s first T20I match against West Indies.

Bat first or second

Hyderabad has hosted just one T20I in history. However, weather conditions saw the fixture being called off before toss and the latest match carries a similar concern. India, with six wins in their last six against world champions West Indies, are poised to field first considering 2019 has seen the Men in Blue win four games as a chasing party.

The Men in Blue have been in decent form this year, winning seven of 13 T20Is and are in pole position to get the better of an inconsistent Windies team. India have failed to register a 100-plus total just once in 2019 (1st T20I against WI in India’s tour of Windies), and the 2020 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup favourites are well-placed to put up a 200-plus total in the first T20I against the Men in Maroon.

While he has been in imperious form in T20 cricket, Manish Pandey has been quite the contrast on the international front and is tipped to find his rhythm against West Indies on Friday. With 336 runs from 10 T20 matches, the Karnataka batsman eyes his first 50-plus score in the shortest format since 2018, and better his record against the Carribean Kings.

Kieron Pollard will need to inject his T20 form into the T20I format and drive out the Windies from their disastrous form in 2019. The T20I skipper is 47 runs shy of the 1000-run mark in the twenty-over format and in the absence of Chris Gayle, a valuable ‘Pollard’ knock will inspire the World Champions to grab a lead in the three-match series.

The pitch conditions at Hyderabad offers a lending hand to fast bowlers, who are equipped with the slower ball. Deepak Chahar, in that sense, will look to fire all his cylinders and maintain the bright start to his nascent international career. The 27-year-old scalped the best figures in T20I history (6/27 against Bangladesh), and Virat Kohli will pins his hopes on Chahar to spell trouble for an inconsistent Windies batting line-up.

As for the visitors, medium pacer Kesrick Williams has been Windies’ standout bowler in the recently-concluded T20I series against Afghanistan, and fancies a shot at wreaking havoc over the Indian batsmen. The 29-year-old has picked up 38 wickets in 21 T20I games, and is primed to consolidate the count against the Men in Blue in their yard.
