Why the new Evil Geniuses squad has massive potential
Evil Geniuses’ Dota 2 squad has undergone a huge revamp with two new players. With the additions of Egor 'Nightfall' Grigorenko and the legendary Jesse ‘JerAx’ Vainikka, they are loaded with talent. Let’s talk about why this new lineup has the potential to become a top team.
EG retained three of their core members from The International 10 roster. Franchise player Artour ‘Arteezy’ Babaev is still the team’s centrepiece as the hard carry. He is joined by fellow longtime EG player Andreas Franck ‘Cr1t-’ Nielsen and talented midlaner Abed ‘Abed’ Yusop.
As the core trio, these three stars were EG’s strongest players during the past two years. The previous squad with Daryl Koh ‘iceiceice’ Pei Xiang and former captain Tal ‘Fly’ Aizik was strong but they couldn’t make it far at the biggest stages. Now, this new EG squad has piqued most Dota 2 fans’ interests because of the new additions.
The new additions are promising
Nightfall was a part of Virtus.Pro who just finished in the top 6 at TI10. While he was playing as the team’s hard carry, he always wanted to play in the offlane. With his aggressive playstyle, he would be the perfect complementary piece for both Abed and Arteezy who are farm-intensive players. Now that they have a solid aggressive player, you can expect EG to be a more well-rounded team.
The Russian is also known as one of the most promising players because he loves playing with a diverse hero pool. VP was known to experiment with their heroes and Nightfall was a large proponent of that style. Now, EG coach Kanishka ‘BuLba’ Sosale will have more chances to be more diverse with the draft rather than relying on one strategy like what they did with Storm Spirit during the Fly era.
JerAx is probably the biggest signing of any team in the Dota Pro Circuit. While he is fresh off a two-year-long retirement, JerAx is still one of the most talented players in Dota history. He was the driving force behind the OG squad that won two straight TIs in 2018 and 2019. He will play alongside another former OG member in Cr1t- in the support duo.
JerAx will bring a new mindset to the team because he values a calculated approach to Dota and EG has always needed that steady presence because the team is usually chaotic.
EG’s potential is through the roof
In terms of raw potential, Team Secret is the only new squad that can match EG’s level. Secret has one of the best rosters in the world today but EG has a two-time TI winner who can be the push that they need to win a second TI themselves. JerAx is the only TI winner left on the squad because the TI5 squad are all mostly retired except for Syed ‘SumaiL’ Hassan who is playing for Secret now.
If JerAx can bring the OG magic from his two TI wins to EG, you can expect an amazing storyline to follow. EG has all of the talents in the world but they always find a way to struggle during TI. Arteezy will always be the main barometer for the team but with JerAx and Nightfall joining the team, they have more winning conditions now.
In the past, it was only Abed or Arteezy who can carry the game to victory but now, they have more players who can lead the team to big wins.
