Caleb Jones is looking to break out for the Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have a plethora of potential when it comes to their young players. They are constantly improving and one man who wants to break out is Caleb Jones. The Oilers have used their young talent over the years to turn their franchise into a solid team again.
You think of players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who grew into their potential for the Oilers. They finished second in the Pacific Division in the 2019-2020 season thanks to their young talents turning into very productive players.
As one of the most promising defensemen, Jones is already well-known to the Oilers fans. People expected that he would have a breakout season last year but it was Ethan Bear who took the spotlight for the Oilers as he grew into one of the best rookies in the league.
Jones only averaged around 14 minutes per game which was a drop off from his 20 minutes per game back in the 2018-2019 season. Because of this, Jones is keen to become a top player for the Oilers and he knows that he only needs one opportunity to break out.
A big factor to Jones’ possible breakout season is because Oscar Klefbom is dealing with a nagging injury. The Swedish defenceman is known for being a workhorse for the Oilers in the past few years. He is a fan favourite because of his defensive intensity and how he contributes to the Oilers’ counter-attack.
However, he is dealing with a bout with arthritis in his shoulder. This will force him out for a large part of the 2020-2021 season. General manager Ken Holland even believes that Klefbom will miss the entire season. He said, ‘I’m planning for 2020-21 that Oscar is not playing and anything other than that will be a surprise. A pleasant surprise’.
Oilers fans are obviously saddened with the loss of Klefbom but it will give opportunities to other players. The aforementioned Bear was an exciting prospect last season, he and Jones will combine for a good duo who can help in the Oilers’ bid for title contention.
