Sabres trade Eichel to Vegas
The Buffalo Sabres have sent Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights in a shocking trade. This was one of the unexpected moves in the 2021-22 season especially with a star like Eichel involved.
Eichel was the hot topic for a lot of trade rumours. Ever since he was injured in the 2020-21 run, the Sabres and Eichel have been falling apart, and that soon led to this move. The trade was the product of frustration and lack of success between the team and the star.
The Sabres took home Peyton Krebs, Alex Tuch, and two draft picks in the 2022 and 2023 NHL Drafts. Vegas landed a third-round pick in the 2023 draft. While Vegas is seen as the winner here, it was also all about the Sabres’ fast move to trade Eichel.
Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon said that it was a big steal for them, and they see Eichel as the next piece they need to create a winning team after giving star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury away in the offseason.
‘In Jack Eichel, we are getting a player that I think is one of the top players in the league, one of the top centers in the league, he is in the prime of his career as a player who just turned 25 years old’, the Golden Knights GM said. ‘It addresses a need in our organization. For me, when you look at what an NHL-contending team should look like, he's a really important piece of that’.
The Eichel trade closes out a storied chapter in the star’s career. It was always about winning games, but the Buffalo playoff drought has gone on for years. This means Eichel’s future and potential was in a bottleneck with the Sabres.
Now that Vegas has a new star in their roster, fans can expect Eichel to heal up with a surgery coming up. This should bring him back to full health as he looks to start a new chapter with the team and revamp his career with a club that wins games.
