Why Connor McDavid is the talisman for the Edmonton Oilers
After what Oilers fans considered a perpetual rebuild, the Edmonton Oilers have been strong in recent years. This is largely due to the talismanic Connor McDavid. He is considered the next face of the team as the captain and their star centre.
In the 2021-22 season so far, McDavid has performed at his usual level. He is in the top tier of both scoring and assists because of how he impacts the game. Even without the puck at his feet, you can expect him to still make an impact. When he does have it, he can either score or make the right pass.
As another top scorer, Leon Draisaitl is blessed to have Connor as his teammate because they form one of the most dangerous duos in the NHL. They are two of the best players in the NHL and they’re performing at their peak level so far this season. They are a delight to watch but Connor is the bigger star between the two players.
Connor always dazzles for the Oilers
In a recent game between the Oilers and the Winnipeg Jets, it was a playoff-level performance from both teams. As they played out one of the best games of the season so far, Connor was amazing yet again for the Oilers. He was the push they needed to keep themselves in the running for the top seed in the Pacific Division.
Connor scored multiple goals during the match showcasing his bag of tricks. He scored most of his goals with a certain flash to them. It was an amazing performance from the Oilers captain as he scored from different angles and he also used his speed to get past the Jets defenders.
It was a dazzling performance from Connor as he continues to prove why he’s one of the best players in the NHL. He is only 24 years of age but he’s already showcasing the skills of an all-time great. You can also rely on him to be a standout player for the Oilers even if they have strong performances from other Oilers.
Connor performs despite a disadvantage
Even if Connor is known around the world as the Oilers’ centrepiece, he still struggles to get calls. While he is always getting hit by the opposing team, the referees swallow their whistle when it comes to McDavid. He is always at a disadvantage because he does not get the calls that he wants.
Despite the lack of calls, Connor himself is still performing at the highest level. He has always taken the brunt of the hits but the game against the Jets was a huge slog to go through for Connor. He has complained about the contact he receives but he does not want to get preferential treatment.
Oilers centre Kyle Turris talked about how Connor manages to score despite the disadvantage.
He said, ‘After what Oilers fans considered a perpetual rebuild, the Edmonton Oilers have been strong in recent years… He has a sense for when he can do it and when not to. As you mature as a player, as you grow, you figure out those times. Both those goals he was in the middle of the ice, picking up speed, and the other team was coming at him. A situation where he can wheel and deal’.
It will be interesting to see how Connor will perform for the rest of his career because he is thriving in his talisman role for the Oilers.
