Kamaru Usman retains his welterweight title against Covington

In a title rematch, Kamaru Usman retained his UFC welterweight title against Colby Covington via unanimous decision in the UFC 268 main event at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. It was a strong fight for Usman as he dominated for most of the match.

The second match was not as fast-paced as the first one but both men were stellar with their strikes. Usman’s round two was a strong performance as he knocked Covington twice. Most fans and pundits thought that was the end of the fight but Colby kept up and forced a five-round decision result.

Of course, the result went to Usman but Covington put up a solid fight. After the match, Covington himself talked about how he tried his best against the champ. The challenger said, ‘I had my moments. I wobbled him a couple times at the end of the round and I wasn't able to capitalize. He had the better night’.

Both fighters were involved in trash-talking over the past few years which was the main fire behind their rivalry. However, after the fight, the two men hugged each other which signalled the end of the rivalry. It also showed that both fighters respect each other as they shared nine rounds in the Octagon.

Usman had a post-fight interview where he talked about what happened. The champ said, ‘I just gotta give it up. I know there was a lot of trash talk and bad blood and there's still going to be some after tonight. But he's a tough son of a... I mean, when you share an octagon with someone this tough, you can't help it. That respect is going to come. He hit me with some shots and I could tell they've been working on it. The power came up a little bit and I could tell they had been working on it. I had to give him that respect’.

Thankfully, Covington took the loss in stride. There is no more anonymity between the two stars since it was a definitive result over the last two fights.
