Akwa United close in on the NPFL title with a 3-0 win over Warri
Akwa United’s grip on the top spot in the NPFL continues to tighten with their stellar 3-0 win over Warri Wolves. They now have a six-point lead atop the NPFL after both Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars lost both of their games on Matchday 34.
Akwa moves closer to their first NPFL title after their dominant 3-0 over Warri in Uyo. Charles Atshimene was the star of the show since he scored a brace for the Promise Keepers. Ubong Friday scored the other goal to secure the victory over Warri. They strengthened their spot at the top of the standings with 63 points across 34 games.
On the other hand, Nasarawa fell in their latest bid to chase the top spot after an insane game against Lobi Stars which ended in a 3-2 scoreline. Nasarawa had the lead twice in the game when Silas Nwankwo scored the opener and the tie-breaker. However, Lobi was saved by Samuel Mathias and Austine Ogunye after scoring the three goals.
Is the title race over?
With Akwa’s six-point lead, it will be hard to chase them for the top spot in the NPFL. Both Nasarawa and Kano will have an uphill battle since they have to chase Akwa United. The two chasers will have to hope Akwa will lose a few of their remaining games so they can properly catch up.
Kano also lost their Matchday 34 game when they fell to Enugu Rangers two goals to none. Christian Nnaji and Esor Achibong were the goal-scorers for the Rangers who took the victory to pull off the big upset. Both teams finished the game with 10 men since both teams had a red card apiece.
While the title race is not over, Akwa will likely take the trophy in the next few weeks. They need to secure more wins to tighten their grip on their first Nigerian league title. They have to avoid complacency because it will be the deciding factor between them and the trophy.
Akwa is ready to win
The Akwa squad is ready to prove their hard work will pay off at the end of the season. Defender Sampson Gbadebo talked about how he and his teammates are ready to put the finishing touches on this season.
‘We have put in a lot of work to get to where we are at the moment and we want to keep that momentum till the end of the season’, Sampson said. ‘The remaining matches are of huge significance and we don’t have to leave anything to chance at this point of the season. We need maximum concentration, dedication and focus from everyone as we approach the remaining matches’.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but Akwa has the momentum to win it all.
