Alphonso Davies Still in Disbelief

Despite being with the Bayern Munich in no more than a year and then some, the young player has contributed significantly to the club.

Bayern Munich’s young player, Alphonso Davies, said recently that he still finds it difficult believing that he’s playing in a team with Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho. ‘I still can’t believe they’re my teammates’, he said. Just 19 years old, Davies arrived in the league in January 2019 from the Vancouver Whitecaps. Of course, as for any newcomer, he had to work hard for playing time with the first-team. However, after injuries sidelined a few players, the opportunity for him to play and prove his talents as a left-sided specialist opened up.

As is with any eager rookie, he grabbed the opportunity by the throat with both hands and never looked back. So far, he’s played in 14 games and has had 10 starts in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season. He’s also recorded a goal and an assist as he helps the club in their title defence.

Even though there have only been nine members of the club’s 31-man first-team that have played more minutes than Davies, he still has to pinch himself often since it all seems like a dream to him. ‘I’m playing with all these superstars and I still say “wow”’, he said. ‘I walk in the locker room and I shake Lewandowski’s hand, Coutinho’s hand, Thiago’s hand, and David Alaba’s. I can’t believe these people are my teammates. I grew up watching these guys, so it’s truly amazing’.

Nevertheless, Davies’ contribution cannot be overlooked. Him stepping up to fill the spot left by someone who’s as capable as Alaba - who, by the way, moved to centre-back - isn’t an easy task at all. However, thanks to the time he’s spent playing on the pitch and practising with his teammates led to a significant improvement in his performance. ‘I’m currently very satisfied with the position Alphonso has’, said head coach Hansi Flick. ‘He’s done very well defensively. His pace makes him an asset for us at the back. He’s also very robust against the ball. I really like his development’.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic was also impressed with the way he’s been playing. ‘We signed Alphonso Davies a year ago because we saw him as one of the best players of his generation. We're delighted that this is now being confirmed with every game he plays’.
