Austria clinch berth to next round in win over Ukraine
Austria wraps up their Group Stages run with a 1-0 win over Ukraine to book their ticket to the Knockout Stages. The team wants a chance at the title this year and it looks like they have it thanks to Christoph Baumgartner’s goal to win it for the team.
The win marks the first time that Austria has moved on to the next level in the Euro tourney. Ukraine is now on the ropes this time and they hope for a chance to get to the last 16 at the very least. They will have to wait out the results from other games as well.
Baumgartner is now keen to get to a big game with Italy in the last 16. It seems like Austria's ace player and the rest of the team’s confidence is also at a high level at this point in time.
‘I still cannot believe it’, the star said. ‘And on top of that, my head hurts. I'm happy for all of Austria and I hope they all enjoyed it. The round of 16 game against Italy will be a big game. We made history today, but it is still not over’.
The star turned in David Alaba’s corner midway in the first half. He was forced to get off the pitch when he took a hit to the head. However, Austria was in full control for the rest of the game and they did not look back after taking the lead in the 21st minute.
The Dutch squad has won the group with a haul of nine points in all three games. Austria has lost once and is on the second spot at the very least. With the loss, Ukraine has three points with a goal difference of -3.
Austria’s fun is cut short by the fact that they will battle Italy in the last 16. The squad has also proved to be a better team so far and has stayed unbeaten in their last 30 games - and 11 of those were clean sheets. This will surely be a big task for Austria as they hope to get a win going this time.
