EPL Fantasy Season Preview Part 3 - First round summary

The season started in the usual way, with disappointment in our Fantasy assets. Our teams look so good on paper and then a few minutes into the first game of the new season, Liverpool concedes the goal and my highly-priced indestructible Liverpool defenders duo loses clean sheet points. Salah delivered as usual, with an assist, goal, and couple of bonus points to get a very respectable 12 points. To be fair, it must be mentioned that Liverpool's comeback was orchestrated mostly by the introduction of Nunez up front. Liverpool looked much more dangerous with him in the team and with this performance, Nunez has put his claims for that 3rd Liverpool spot.

Tottenham had a good first game and Conte played just like I expected him to, with very attacking wing backs and they got plenty of points and a lot of action in front of the goal. Unfortunately, those wingbacks were not the ones that I thought would be the first choice. That has proven once again how big competition for wing-back positions in Spurs actually is. If one of the wing-backs (hopefully Perišić)manages to secure a wing back spot, he will become almost essential in our teams. Kane disappointed us up front with zero returns but he had some nice chances and I expect him to rectify this situation sooner than later. The main star of the evening was Kulusevski with 13 points, that should probably be enough to keep him in the first team in front of Richarlison and makes him another very good 8M option. We could see him rise in price soon so manage transfers carefully if you are interested in Kulusevski.

Newcastle was very dominant against Forrest, but they needed an incredible effort from Schar to open the deadlock. That goal, plus clean sheet and bonus points, made him the joint highest scoring asset of the game week with 15 points. What is more important, he is no stranger to such goals and he is definitely a viable fantasy asset with the price of just 4.5M and playing for a quite reliable Newcastle defense. The same can be said for Trippier and I am not sure I am brave enough for Newcastle's defensive double-up. In the attack, Willson confirmed that he is a world-class striker when match fit and I see Newcastle doing very well this season with him up front. Another price rise could happen here knowing the casual managers.

Leicester had much more of the game in the first half and they looked very dangerous. Tielemans could be a great option if he stays, he took 5 or 6 shots from outside the box and most of them were on target. Dewsbury-Hall is also great as a budget option, same as Ward, who is only 4M playing keeper. Leicester dropped off big time after the 60th minute and let Brentford back in the game so there could be some deficiencies in their stamina levels. Everything in Brentford's attack is revolving around Toney and he is on penalties, so if you see Brentford doing well, he is a great way into their team.

From the other matches, Chelsea took all three points and kept a clean sheet which was great for heavy-owned James and Chilwell, but they once again had a lot of problems in the front opposition goal. Aston Villa disappointed us greatly and lost without scoring a single goal against Bournemouth's side that everyone believed will be the whipping boys of the first few game weeks. Leeds managed to turn the Wolves and won 2:1 at the end of a very competitive game. The standout player for Leeds was Harrison. United was so bad that they are almost not worth mentioning, they were bad in attack and nowhere in defense. Don’t flock to Gross now because he scored 2 goals, that will not happen every game week

The last game this GW was West Ham – City so it is only fitting I finish this review with this one. The result was quite expected, same as City line up with exception of Mahrez missing from the first 11 and Foden playing on the right flank. Haaland spearheaded all the attacks and looked very dangerous with runs behind the defense. DeBruyne is probably the best guy to supply perfect balls for those runs so this could be a match made in heaven for City. They impressed me enough that I admitted my mistake and immediately transferred out Kane for Haaland. I am not a fan of early transfers but I had to pull an early trigger on this one since I expect price changes on both of them and that would price me out from transfer.

There will be another article on Wednesday/Thursday – GW2 Preview and a live chat session after that. Hopefully, I will see you all on the chat to get a bit of feedback and hear what you want me to write about.
