European Championships Team Profile - England
With the European Championships set to start soon, some teams have emerged as dark horses. One of those lowkey contenders is England. With Gareth Southgate at the helm, they will struggle but they can keep playing at a high level and possibly win the whole event.
England is obviously reliant on their star players. However, their depth is one of their best assets now. Gone are the days when people talk about their midfield being their only weapon against the other teams in Europe. England is now a team that has elite talents in every position to the point where they can compete with the likes of France and Belgium.
Despite the number of elite talents on the squad, Harry Kane is still the team’s best player. He is not only the top striker but he’s also the captain of the squad. In the latest World Cup, people thought that Kane was the only bright spot for this team. However, other players have kept developing and have turned into elite talents with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire getting even better as time goes on.
Are there issues in the team?
No team is perfect as England has its own issues. Despite their talent in the right-back position, they still struggle in selecting a solid option for the position. An RB should be good on the defensive side while also contributing to the attack.
England’s offence has mainly centred around creating from the left side of the pitch which means that someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold is needed. However, his defence is shaky which is why he’s not being called up to the main squad. Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, and Reece James are all good but they have deficiencies.
Apart from the RB role, the midfield is also a tricky subject for England. The likes of Mason Mount should be a lock for the team but players such as James Ward-Prowse, Jordan Henderson, and Jude Bellingham should also be considered. They need to make sure that they have the right mix so that they can win over the best teams in Europe.
The goalkeeper issue is big as well given that Jordan Pickford has not played well ever since his heroic performance in 2018. Dean Henderson and Nick Pope can be considered here as well. Thankfully, their frontline is mostly fine with Kane leading the charge. This is the same with the defence as Maguire and John Stones have continued to be stalwarts for this team. Hopefully, Southgate can make the right decisions to help the team win a trophy
Can England win the event?
The European Championships will be one of the biggest events of the past few years. England wants to win a trophy as they know that they can keep competing at a high level. Kane will be the barometer for this team as he is the main star who will score the goals for the Three Lions.
There are tough matchups in this event as reigning champions Portugal is still a tough threat. Apart from them, France and Belgium are also strong given that the former just won the latest World Cup. On the other hand, Belgium has a crop of talent that can overwhelm any team that plays against them.
England will be a hard team to play against as they have all the tools to succeed. It will be interesting to see how England can meet their high potential and the lofty expectations that fans have over them.
