Five scenarios to bank upon in Liverpool’s fixture against Norwich City
The European Champions kickoff the Premier League season with a Friday night fixture against Norwich City at Anfield. Here we list the five most plausible situations that could arise from the match, and our prediction on who wins it.
Jürgen Klopp’s side scored first in 28 of 38 league matches last term. Their start to games was quite thrilling to watch and quite often caught the opposition cold. The Merseysiders also have a tremendous record at Anfield and with the newly promoted Norwich still to get used to the pace of the Premier League, the European Champions are outright to be the first to hit the back of the net.
In six matches against promoted clubs last season, Klopp’s men scored a staggering 14 goals and conceded just twice. There were at least two goals in each of those matches, with clean sheets in four of them. Sadio Mane’s possible absence though, could hamper the formidability of the attack and the number of goals they score. Having said that, the Reds will still score at least twice.
Highest scoring half
A feature of Liverpool’s play last season was their ability to score late goals. Their philosophy played a massive part in it as oppositions would get more tired as time went on, triggering lapses in concentration and opening of spaces. The Reds scored 21% of their goals in the last 10 minutes of matches last season, while 13% of their goals came between the 60th and 70th-minute mark. Norwich likewise, will be gotten a better clue of themselves by the second 45, hence adding to the overall probability.
Liverpool FC clean sheet
Alisson won the Premier League Golden Glove last season, keeping 21 clean sheets in 38 matches. Most of these came at Anfield as teams found it difficult to adjust to Liverpool’s pace, dynamism and the visible support they received. Virgil Van Dijk, Joël Matip, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are as good a backline one can get in the league, and with all of them fit and firing, Norwich’s chances of hitting the net decrease even further.
With uncertainty still surrounding Mane’s inclusion, Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah is the natural pick to open the floodgates this season. Salah has a tremendous record ever since he joined Liverpool, topping the scoring charts in both season’s he has been involved in.
Prediction: Liverpool to win 3-0. Mohamed Salah to open the scoring.
