France wins their first game due to Germany's own goal
In one of the most anticipated games of the European Championships, France took the win over Germany due to defender Mats Hummels’ own goal in the 20th minute. It was a disappointing result for the Germans since they played good defence for 90 minutes.
France’s superstar Kylian Mbappé did not have a great game even if he had multiple chances to score. He was deemed offside twice when he had a clear shot to score. He had a hand in the own goal since Hummels tried to stop him but ended up kicking the ball into his own net past Manuel Neuer.
Apart from Mbappé, the Man of the Match was Paul Pogba in the midfield. He was amazing in his performance because he controlled the pace of the game with his passing and his dribbles. After the game, he gave credit to his teammates and how they helped boost his play.
‘The team's performance is the most important thing’, Pogba said. ‘Without them, I wouldn't have played as well. We all put the effort in... We're focused on our jobs on the pitch. We know we need to live up to our tag as world champions and come out onto the pitch with humility. When we need to suffer, we do it together and when we attack, we do it together’.
A big win for France
Group F is dubbed the ‘Group of Death’ by the majority of the viewers of the European Championships. Now that they have a win over Germany, France needs to beat Portugal to cement their spot atop the group. They still have Hungary on their schedule but they are heavily favoured to win that game.
France head coach Didier Deschamps was happy after the match. Of course, it was not a pretty win since they had to take the positive result from an own goal. However, Deschamps looks at the bright side of the game.
‘We played a great game against very good opponents’, he said. ‘I knew my players would be ready and we were up for the fight. We weren't far away from scoring the second goal that would have made us safe, but we didn't suffer that much in the second half. It was a strong match with quality and talent’.
What’s next for Group F?
France will face Hungary on the 19th of June which will lean towards the former. Portugal and Germany will duke it out on the same day which should be an awesome game since both teams are filled to the brim with talent.
This group is still up for grabs because that Portugal vs France match on the 23rd of June is primed to be the best of the tournament. Hopefully, people will see a fun game filled with brilliant highlights.
