Galatasaray Beat Fenerbahçe After 20 Years
The Istanbul heavyweights have finally broken their 20-year curse of being unable to beat Fenerbahçe.
In a twist of fate, Galatasaray has broken the Kadıköy jinx when they beat their archrivals Fenerbahçe 3-1 while playing as the away team. The Intercontinental Derby win meant that the Lions were successful in beating the Yellow Canaries in the Ülker Stadium for the first time since 1999. Despite Galatasaray’s strong start, Fenerbahçe was able to score a goal for themselves after a penalty was awarded to them. It was Max Kruse who would give Fenerbahçe their first goal during the 21st minute. However, Galatasaray did not let up and scored the equalizing goal during the 40th minute thanks to a head by Ryan Donk. The first half would end in a 1-1 draw.
At the start of the second half, Galatasaray’s Radamel Falcao was able to score the go-ahead goal during the 80th minute from a penalty kick. It would be Henry Onyekuru who would put the final nail in the coffin, scoring Galatasaray’s final goal during the 97th minute. The victory ended a 20-year curse in which Galatasaray have been unsuccessful in beating Fenerbahçe away.
Despite the match already coming to an end, tensions seemed to have risen when Fenerbahçe coach Ersun Yanal and Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim were both fuming. Yanal was given a red card while Terim was given a yellow card. The players were also caught in an altercation. Fenerbahçe's Deniz Türüç and Galatasaray's Younes Belhanda were both sent off after a brawl.
Since 1999, Fenerbahçe has beaten Galatasaray in their home stadium winning 15 derbies. Eight of those 15 ended in a draw. When Galatasaray visited Fenerbahçe‘s stadium, they were unable to come out with a win since December 1999 for 23 games (20 of which were Super Lig matches). Fenerbahçe was also unforgiving during matches between the two at home. They scored 44 goals in 23 matches while conceding just 15.
Winning the match was also Galatasaray’s sixth consecutive win in the league which boosted the club’s morale significantly. Fenerbahçe, on the other hand, dropped eight points in their last three league matches. With the win, Galatasaray improved to 45 points, tieing both league leader Trabzonspor and third-placed Sivasspor. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, remains in sixth place with 38 points.
In a post-match conference, Terim said that the victory isn’t really as significant. ‘This statistic is not very important for me. I am happy for Galatasaray's fans, who wanted to see a win here. It is important for Galatasaray to win the Fenerbahçe-Galatasaray derby wherever it is’. He then added, ‘It is not only three points for Galatasaray supporters. This score is also important to increase the energy and confidence of the players’.
