Germany, Hungary close Group Stages in 2-2 draw
Germany had high hopes to make sure they get a chance to win in the group of death. It was a shock for many fans out there to see the side finish their run in the Group Stages with a tie instead. This 2-2 draw with Hungary is out of the blue for the team.
What could have been a strong finish for Germany ended up in a tough draw. It was an intense fight from start to finish, but the Germans could have stolen this one with one more goal to wrap up the game.
Hungary was on top in just 10 minutes thanks to a strong header by Adam Szalai, and he did a great job to beat the German back line and outrun them, before he slotted the goal. Kai Havertz then answered back for Germany and tied the game at 1-1.
It did not take long for Hungary to strike once more. Andras Schafer went up for a quick drive and blew past three defenders along with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. He volleyed the ball in with no second thoughts.
Leon Goretzka then came alive to save the day for Germany as he scored in the 85th minute. That allowed Germany to clinch their spot in the last 16 of the Euro tourney. They are now set for a much bigger pace.
Germany had 18 shots and seven of those were on point. They had 76% of the ball in the game and made 722 passes for 90% accuracy. Hungary, on the other hand, was held to just nine shots and only four of those were on target. They held the ball for just 24% but made 236 passes for 71% accuracy.
German coach Joachim Low was not that pleased with the result but said he’ll take it anyway. It is a shot to the next round, so the team has to bounce back. They need to show they are a better team.
‘We made mistakes but we fought, showed grit’, the coach said. ‘It was not for the common fans. In the end, to come through this group was good and that was the aim. What matters is that we are through. Now we play with England and we can look into that match’.
Hungary is now out for the rest of the contest after three games. Putting up a draw in Group F is already a win that the team should value. This is why they will surely come back stronger in the next edition.
Germany hopes to make sure they get the best chances. Now that they are in the next stage of the Euro tourney, it only makes sense for the team to up their game and make sure they do not miss the chance to win big in the competition.
