Germany wins a 4-2 thriller against defending champs Portugal
In one of the most anticipated games of the European Championships’ group stage, Germany managed to score four goals past defending champs Portugal. Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens were the two goal scorers for Germany since the other two goals were own goals from Portugal.
Germany conceded a goal in the early minutes of the match when Cristiano Ronaldo scored impressively. It was a goal that came from a counter-attack and it was a big accolade for him since it was his first-ever goal scored against Germany.
Unfortunately, it was not enough because Rúben Dias and Raphaël Guerreiro kicked the balls into their own net. It was scored in succession in the 35th and 39th minute so it dealt a big blow to the Portuguese side.
Havertz and Gosens scored their goals in the early minutes of the second half to finalize their four goals. Diogo Jota tried to start a comeback by scoring but it was only their second and final goal of the game. Other Portuguese players tried their best to attack but it wasn’t enough.
After their loss to France, the Germans wanted to prove they’re still a strong team that can make it far in the event. Thomas Müller talked about how big this win is for him and the rest of the team.
He said, ‘When you have such good attacking scenes, the kettle boils. Now we have the three points that we absolutely needed. We shouldn’t get carried away. You can feel a little bit of euphoria, but we also have to remain objective’.
On the other side, Portugal coach Fernando Santos took accountability for what happened since he knew he made a mistake. He made sure to talk about how their midfield was not set up the right way and it didn’t work against a strong team like Germany.
Portugal will play France on the 23rd of June which will likely be the biggest game of the group. There is a chance Portugal will not make the main stage which is why they need to step up their game against the world champs. Germany will have their last game of the group against Hungary which pulled off a big result by drawing 1-1 with France.
