Haaland Wins Bundesliga Player of the Month

The 19-year old has won the Bundesliga Player of the Month award for his sterling performance to start his Borussia Dortmund career.

Despite playing only 59 minutes, Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland scored five goals in his first two games with the club. He managed to get a hat-trick on his debut against FC Augsburg and he followed that up with a brace in the latter part of January. This award comes along with the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award.

He is the son of former Manchester City defender and midfielder Alfinge Haaland. The young gun joined Dortmund from the Austrian club FC Salzburg in January for a €20 million transfer fee amid interest from massive clubs like Manchester United and Juventus. He burst onto the scene with Salzburg where he scored 17 goals in his first 16 appearances in the 2019-2020 season.

He has been unstoppable ever since he debuted for Dortmund. In February, he has scored four more goals to take his tally to nine in just six matches.

Haaland admitted that he did not expect this kind of a start to his Dortmund career, ‘To be honest, no, not like this. But you know, that’s how it is, and I’m happy about that’.

Many pundits have compared Haaland to legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, this is due to the 19-year old’s height and immense ability to score at will. Haaland is a powerful forward and is very adept at battles in the air. He often overpowers his opponents using headers and is very explosive with the ball in his feet. He has started to carve out a superstar career with prodigious talent and a body that can keep up with anyone.

Dortmund expected great things from the young Norwegian when they signed him. ‘We can expect an ambitious, athletic and physical centre-forward with a proven nose for goal’, said Dortmund sporting director, Michael Zorc. Now with the services of a young superstar, the club is now seen as contenders to win the title. Dortmund is 3rd on the league table, trailing only RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.

The award is seen as a sign of things to come with Dortmund having Haaland for the foreseeable future. The Norwegian star will continue to keep up his stellar play and win awards for Dortmund until 2024.
