Leipzig Dominates Schalke
Leipzig puts on a masterclass with a 5-0 drubbing of Schalke.
Leipzig’s title hopes are very much alive with an impressive victory over Schalke this past weekend. Julian Nagelsmann’s club is hot on the heels of league table leaders Bayern Munich.
With team captain Marcel Sabitzer scoring a goal in the early minutes of the game, it was evident that Leipzig players were in spectacular form. With a 3-0 victory over Werder and a 1-0 victory against Tottenham in the Champions League, Nagelsmann’s club is on fire at the moment.
They are heating up at the right time during the season, with upcoming matches being against teams that are comparatively weaker than them. Leipzig’s offence is always on point but these past few games, the defence is getting tighter. They have back-to-back clean sheets in the Bundesliga and if the Champions League match is included, Leipzig’s last three matches are all clean sheets.
Nagelsmann was very happy with the result saying, ‘We defended well and hardly let them get a shot off. It was a great performance from us. The boys used the space well’.
Timo Werner who is having a career-best season ended his goal drought in the match against Schalke. He now has 21 goals on the season and there are still 11 matches left on the season. He trails only Bayern superstar Robert Lewandowski who has scored 25 goals on the season.
Werner has been linked to Liverpool recently. Even Werner himself praised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and how his style fits Klopp’s style of play. ‘Jurgen Klopp is the best coach in the world. There is a lot to suggest that my style of play would suit there. I’m not worried about that, because we have so much to do with Leipzig. It’s difficult to think about where to play next year. You have to worry about it after the season’.
Aside from Werner and Sabitzer, there were three other players who managed to score in this match. Marcel Halstenberg, Angeliño, and Emil Forsberg managed to score a goal apiece for the Julian Nagelsmann-led squad.
Leipzig is looking for their first-ever title in the Bundesliga, and if they manage to continue this momentum, they might just snatch the title away from perennial contender Bayern Munich.
