Luis Suárez leads Atlético Madrid back to the top of the table
Atlético Madrid continued their strong start to the 2021-22 season by adding another win to their tally. Luis Suárez scored a brace to get the win against Getafe. This was Atléti’s fourth win of the season which makes them the number one team in the league table again.
When the first half ended, Atléti was hanging their heads in shame because goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a mistake by scoring an own-goal. Stefan Mitrovic hit a header but Jan mishandled it which led to the OG. Fortunately for the defending champs, their star striker Suárez was on target for the second half. He left it late but he scored a brace in the 78th and 91st minutes.
This was the first time Getafe scored a goal past Atléti in 1,583 minutes of La Liga football. This ended manager Diego Simeone’s stellar run of never conceding against their neighbours ever since he took over as the head coach back in December 2011.
Another reason behind the win was Getafe playing with only 10 men for the last 30 minutes. Carles Aleñá was sent off for raking his studs down on Matheus Cunha’s leg.
The red card motivated Atléti to become more aggressive which resulted in Suárez’s brace. The veteran striker played like his classic Barça days by carrying the torch for the defending champs. It was an awesome performance from Suárez because most people doubted him because he is ageing.
After the match, Suárez showed his pleasure in getting the win. He said, ‘Every player at the top level has to learn to live with criticism but what I do is never give in, I'll never get beat down by criticism. Above all I'm happy because of the circumstances of the game and that we managed to turn the scoreline on its head after. We still need to improve and solve a few things that we are not doing well but things will improve because the season has barely started’.
It will be fun to watch the title race this season because both Atléti and crosstown rivals Madrid are both ready to take over as the best team in the Spanish top-flight with Barça struggling.
