Netherlands seal Group C in 2-0 clean sheet win over Austria
The Netherlands came up big in their 2-0 win over Austria as they now punch their ticket into the next round. The Dutch squad proved they are still one of the best sides in the contest and a move to the next stage of the Euro tourney is the best way to show why they are an elite unit.
An early error from Memphis Depay in the 11th minute gave the Dutch squad a 1-0 lead that they needed after a poor start to the game. Denzel Dumfries later came alive in the second half to seal the deal and push their place in the last 16 as winners of Group C.
The Dutch now holds the top spot of Group C after their second win. It was a strong finish from the team as they went on to beat one of the hyped sides in the game. Austria was a team to beat for most but they made it look so easy.
This is the third time the Dutch squad has opened up their Euro games with two wins in a row. They have done the same in 2000 and 2008 - with both runs past the Group Stages as well.
Dumfries’ clutch play lifted the team when they needed him most. He pushed the lead in the next half - scoring his second goal in two games. He was the one who nailed the huge winner over Ukraine in their 3-2 win. Dumfries’ goal was hailed by a crowd of 16,000 at home, and he was pleased to have this chance once more.
‘It's starting to feel like a fairytale. We are really growing, it feels good’, said Dumfries. ‘We owned the game and won all aspects and deserved the win’.
This one was not much of a tense game for the side. They simply cruised their way from start to finish. They were like a wind that found its way through the game without much hassle as well.
The Dutch side had 14 shots and four of those went on point. They held the ball for 46% and made 480 passes in the game for 78% accuracy. On the other hand, Austria had nine shots and only one was so close to the net. They had 54% of the ball and had 529 passes for 82% accuracy.
Depay had a few chances of his own to make up for his error. He missed both of them and it was the lack of grit for Austria that killed off their chances at the top spot of the tourney. It was a huge loss that could have given them a shot at the next stage.
The Dutch host North Macedonia in their next game to wrap up the last games of the competition in Group C after a strong start.
