Schalke Claims 2-0 Win Over Gladbach
Schalke found an unlikely hero in Michael Gregoritsch as the latter scored one of the two big goals in the team’s shocking victory over the second-placed Gladbach. The team claimed a 2-0 clean sheet win to extend their unbeaten run to four straight games.
It hasn’t been easy for Schalke, who has drawn two straight matches prior to the win. The team had hoped for a better start in the second half of the Bundesliga season. Gladbach, on the other hand, has struggled to keep their foot on the gas as they have let defending champions Bayern Munich slip past them for the second place after the loss.
It seems that Schalke has put a dent on Gladbach’s title hopes this season after this win.
The Austrian midfielder shined in his debut. He drained a goal in the 58th minute - just ten minutes right after Suat Serdar gave Schalke a 1-0 lead. It was one of those rare moments that Schalke had an offensive turnaround against an offensive giant in Gladbach.
Schalke had 15 shot attempts in the game, and seven of those were on target. Gladbach’s long possessions have limited the team to just 45%, but they emerged as the victors as Gladbach could not convert a single goal out of their 14 attempts.
Gregoritsch was happy to take part in the team’s win. He propelled the team to move to the fifth place - just three points adrift from Bayern, the team that they are set to play against next weekend.
‘That's how you dream of your debut going. The fact that it worked so well is great and something very special for me’, said Gregoritsch after coming off a winter break in the Bundesliga.
Gladbach captain and goalie Yann Sommer admitted that the team had some big errors in the game.
‘We weren't good enough to cause Schalke trouble’, said Sommer after the tough loss. ‘We didn't find the room and weren't fast enough. Schalke were clearly better. They put a lot of pressure on us’.
The win puts pressure on Schalke’s shoulders as they seem to be on the pace to join the race for the Bundesliga’s top spot. RB Leipzig currently holds down the top spot with 40 points following their 3-1 win over Union Berlin. The team has not lost a single match since October.
