Sivasspor Tightens Hold on Top Spot With Win
Super Lig leaders Sivasspor claimed a 2-1 win over Besiktas to continue their pace while pushing their unbeaten run to five straight games.
Locked in a tight race against Basaksehir for the league’s top spot, the team came up with a huge victory to become the first team in the league to claim 40 points in just 18 matches this season.
Erdogan Yesilyurt drew first blood for the team after coming up with a quick goal early in the seventh minute. He intercepted a long pass and was left wide open against Karius in the goal, but he sank that one down as he managed to strike one over the Besiktas goalie.
Besiktas, however, was able to answer back as their midfielder Adem Ljajic took a quick trip to Sivasspor’s goal, and landed one despite being on a one-on-three disadvantage. That tied the game at 1-1 on the 33rd minute heading into the halftime break.
However, Mustapha Yatabre managed to beat the clock as he took a cross from Askoy in the middle. He got open after moving right behind two defenders before he opted to pull off a shot against Karius, which landed on the upper-left corner of the net.
That broke the tie at the end of the first half, and the team was up 2-1 with another set of 45 minutes to play.
It was a long battle in the second half, and Sivasspor opted to defend well as they went to amass 21 fouls that halted the offensive strides made by Besiktas.
The team would come up with a foul whenever the latter team would attempt to come close to their goal.
Sivasspor only had 11 shot attempts while having five of those on target. They were limited to just 34% possession and was held to just 294 passes - but had 72% passing accuracy.
Besiktas had plenty of chances to come up with a tie or even a win. They attempted 15 shots in the game, and eight of those have seen daylight and nearly went in. They played well on the passing lanes as they thrived on the longer passes that gave them a total of 551 passes for a strong 84% passing accuracy.
The only failure in Besiktas’ offence is that the team failed to make use of their 14 corners. The team could not convert a single one of those as they went downhill with the loss.
The win gives Sivasspor a four-point advantage against Basaksehir to lead in the league table.
Besiktas, on the other hand, falls into a tie with Galatasaray with 30 points. A win could have lifted them over Galatasaray and Alanyaspor for the fifth spot. Besiktas has also lost three of their last five matches. They have only won twice and took a rough start to the second half of the season.
