Streaky Spain redeems themselves with 5-0 win over Slovakia

In one of the most lopsided games of the European Championships, Spain finished their Group E run as runner-ups after they beat Slovakia five goals to none. Slovakia had two own goals including one from their goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka.

Spain head coach Luis Enrique talked about how he would be satisfied with settling against Slovakia to coast to a last 16 berth. It seems the team was not satisfied with their group stage run because Spain played extremely well against Slovakia. They scored five goals and held their opponents scoreless which is one of the biggest one-sided wins in the event's history.

While they benefited from two own-goals from Dúbravka and Juraj Kucka, Spain performed very well. Recent call-up Aymeric Laporte proved his worth by scoring the second goal in the first half’s stoppage time. Pablo Sarabia quickly followed that with the third goal and youngster Ferran Torres secured a 4-0 lead with his 67th-minute goal. Kucka’s own goal ended the match at a 5-0 scoreline.

A big morale boost for Spain

Before this game against Slovakia, Spain struggled in their first two games. They had two draws to their name against Sweden and Poland which is disappointing. They were motivated to perform better in their third and final game and it looks like they’re ready to make a run to the tournament final.

Álvaro Morata was the story of the first two games with his big misses but this is not the case for Spain in this game. While Álvaro missed a penalty kick in the first half, the team did not regret his miss because they still had a five-goal lead at the end of the game.

Team captain Sergio Busquets is pleased with the way they performed in their final group stage game.

‘After that, we continued scoring and it was a good performance for us, and it gives us a great morale boost ahead of the tournament to come’, he said. ‘We would've loved to have scored that penalty, I'm sure Álvaro would've too, but that's football, you must have the courage to step up and take it in the first place. The miss gave us that bit of anger and the team reacted well’.

The main stage is set

The European Championships’ main stage is set to be an amazing one. The biggest matchup would have to be Belgium vs Portugal but people should not overlook the potential of Croatia vs Spain.

While Croatia is the favourite, Spain proved they can score countless goals in this event with this win over Slovakia. Luka Modrić played well in this event so far which will be hard for Spain. However, people should be excited about the prospect of Spain making it far since they’re filled with talented stars and they’re filled to the brim with confidence due to this massive 5-0 win over Slovakia.
