Switzerland surges past Turkey in a thrilling 3-1 result
Switzerland got their first victory of the event with a 3-1 win over Turkey. Xherdan Shaqiri was the star of the show because he scored a brace. Haris Seferović scored the other goal for the Swiss while İrfan Kahveci was the only goal scorer for Turkey.
The Swiss will now have to wait for the other groups to wrap up to know what their destiny is. This was a thrilling game to watch because both teams tried their best to establish themselves early on. The aggression was on display but it was the Swiss who took over with the Seferović left-footed goal in the sixth minute.
Shaqiri then doubled the Swiss’ lead in the 26th minute with a pretty curling shot from outside of the box. Turkey tried their best to work their way back up in the second half with Irfan’s effort in the 62nd minute. Turkey thought they had the moment to come back from a deficit but Shaqiri ended their hopes by scoring another goal six minutes later.
Shaqiri’s brilliance again
Shaq was an amazing player during this game. People tend to overlook Shaq because he rarely plays in Liverpool’s loaded front line. However, he has proven time and again that he’s an elite talent who can take over a game on his own.
He proved that during this game because Shaq scored a brace and he was brilliant for almost the entire 90 minutes with his passing and the use of his blistering pace. Shaq continues to prove that he's one of the best Swiss players and deserves to be considered as one of the best centrepieces in this event.
After the game, Shaq talked to the media and he spoke about how he’s glad about the win. He said, ‘We needed to win and we reacted so well to the pressure, we played like a proper unit. My first goal, with my right foot, was very good technique’.
It is great to see that Shaq is getting the recognition that he deserves. In club football, he tends to take a step back but with the Swiss, he is seen as one of the biggest threats on the pitch. Hopefully, Shaq can do it on the main stage because Switzerland will have to squeak through based on the other groups’ third-placed teams.
A disappointing run from Turkey comes to an end
Entering the event, Turkey was seen as one of the best dark horses of the event. Unfortunately, they ended their run without a win in three games. While Italy was the favourite out of Group A, Turkey was seen as the second-best team out of the four squads. Both Wales and Switzerland beat Turkey convincingly with a 2-0 and 3-1 result respectively.
Turkish fans lament the fact that they had a terrible run in the event. Most of the blame is pointed towards manager Şenol Güneş and how he set up the team to play. Prominent Turkish pundit Erman Toroğlu talked about how this disastrous run should be the final straw for Güneş and his system.
He said, ‘With this kind of Şenol and this kind of football federation, this is the kind of national team we are left with. Everything is rotten. The truth hurts’.
The rest of the event will still be interesting since Wales will advance again and Italy continues to prove why they’re a resurgent side. Swiss fans hope the other groups can play out well for them.
