Top five goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season

The 2021-22 Premier League was one of the most eventful campaigns in the world of football in the past decade. It featured storylines headlined by the title race between Manchester City and Liverpool. While there are many big stories, the best goals need the spotlight.

Most people will look back at the title race or the race for the fourth spot between Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Manchester United as highlights of the season. However, we are taking a look at the goals that took the football world’s collective breath away.

The Prem is filled with top-tier goal-scorers that can be relied upon to carry their teams to wins. However, there were a few goals that have stood out among the rest. Here are the five best goals back in the 2021-22 Premier League campaign.

Andros Townsend vs Burnley (September 14, 2021)

In one of the most insane highlights of the first few weeks of the season, Everton’s Andros Townsend pulled off an amazing goal from outside of the box. This was from a counter-attack as his full-back made a long pass into the other half of the pitch. Townsend is well-known for scoring highlight goals in the past during his time with Crystal Palace but this long-range goal is a candidate for the best of his career.

While Everton struggled in the early part of the season, this was one of the biggest wins that they could look back on. Townsend’s goal was crucial in the 3-1 result as it galvanised the team toward the win.

Townsend proved his doubters wrong

When he joined Everton, Townsend’s entry was criticised. He was not a star player for Palace during the tail-end of his stint there and most fans thought that he was not going to be useful for Everton. He had a resurgent season for the Toffees as he managed to play half of the season but still was productive during games he was active. This was a productive year for Townsend which was highlighted by one of the top goals of the season.

Rodri vs Everton (November 21, 2021)

As one of the top performers for Prem champs Man City, Rodri had a fantastic season. He was the most prominent defensive midfielder for the champs as he played in 33 out of the 38 games. Despite his role as a DM, Rodri still stood out as a goal-scorer with seven during the season. He was arguably Man City’s best player in the 2021-22 season because of his excellence on the defensive side of the game.

He scored one of the most insane goals of the season in this match against Everton. City struggled to score early in the match but when Raheem Sterling knocked in the first goal, the floodgates opened for the rest of the City squad.

Rodri continued his long-range prowess

They attacked and breached the Toffees' defence but Everton managed to stop the shot. When the ball ricocheted, it fell to Rodri to hit a long volley shot into the top-left corner. It was one of the most powerful shots and it is rightfully known as one of the best goals of the season.

After the match, Rodri was ecstatic about what he did against the Toffees. He said, ‘Of course I am very happy with my goal, I don't score many. Many times I don't have the opportunity to shoot as I pass, but at that moment I felt it, kind of a rocket. I'm very happy because the goal was a beauty’.

Mateo Kovačić vs Liverpool (January 2, 2022)

Chelsea had a strong season but they were just behind the top two teams in the Prem. They were seen as one of the favourites heading into the season but their Romelu Lukaku signing did not pan out properly. It was one of the most expensive signings of the season but the Belgian struggled in his first year back in West London.

This led to other players stepping up to score goals for the Blues. This involves midfielders like Mateo Kovačić who had one of the best goals of the season in a January 2022 match against Liverpool.

The goal that ultimately cost Liverpool the title

LFC ended the season just one point behind Man City but a result that stung the Reds was this match in early 2022. They were leading two goals to none after 26 minutes when Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah scored a goal apiece.

In the 42nd minute, Kovačić scored a screamer goal to start Chelsea’s comeback. This was one of the most amazing goals of the season because he capitalised on the ball being headed outside of the box after a free-kick. The Croatian scored a front kick volley and it curled into the top-right corner. It was one of the toughest goals of the season because of how much pressure was on him and the degree of difficulty.

This goal ended up costing LFC the title because the Blues managed to equalise at two goals apiece when Christian Pulisic scored in the 46th minute. If LFC held on without those two goals, they would’ve ended up two points above City in the league table and they could’ve had a domestic treble.

Mohamed Salah vs Manchester City (October 3, 2021)

Let’s pivot from a sad day for LFC fans to one of the biggest moments of their 2021-22 season. Back in October 2021, Salah managed to score one of the best goals of the season on his own. When he received the ball outside of the box, Salah dribbled past six defenders en route to scoring a fantastic solo goal.

It was one of the biggest highlights of the Premier League season because Salah got past the elite cast of talent on City’s squad. This match ended in a draw because of Kevin De Bruyne’s equalising goal just minutes later.

Salah is a nightmare matchup for any defender

As one of the top players in the league, Salah proved that he is a matchup nightmare for any defender. He dribbled past almost every player on the City squad and he proved to be the ultimate goal-scorer of the season at the end of the season. He was the co-winner of the Golden Boot alongside Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur.

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Norwich City (April 16, 2022)

It was a landmark year for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Premier League in the 2021-22 season. This was his first time playing back for Man United since 2009 when he left for Real Madrid. It looked like he never lost a step as CR7 scored 18 goals in his return to the Prem.

This was the highlight of those 18 goals as CR7 finished up his second hat trick of the season with a stellar free-kick. It was one of the best highlights of the season from arguably the best footballer of all time. This goal was crucial to the Reds’ win as the game ended with a 3-2 scoreline.
