Turkey Football Updates

From player movements to match updates to match schedules, here are a few updates to satisfy your Turkish football cravings.

There are many reports saying that Arsenal star Mesut Ozil will be shown the door this summer. According to sources, this could be part of Mikel Arteta’s end of season cull. There are also rumours saying that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could join Ozil’s exit. Arteta could potentially be planning to upgrade his squad in his first time as Arsenal’s manager.

Despite reports claiming these, Ozil has made it clear that he will stay in Arsenal until the end of his contract. ‘I’m very pleased with my contract and I will continue here this season and next’, he said in an interview. ‘I can’t tell you what the future will bring, I’m excited about the future, but I don’t know what’s going to happen’.

In other news, Croatia will play against Turkey in Osijek. It will be part of the lead up towards the Euro 2020. The two will meet at the Gradski vrt Stadium in Osijek on June 1. It will be the first of two matches the team will play in June before they make their final preparations and depart for the European competition.

Currently, Turkey is ranked 29th in the world. Their upcoming match with Croatia will only be the 10th time the two will meet. Despite this, there have been a few memorable matches between them over the past 25 years. One of the most notable matches between the two took place in 1996 when Goran Vlaović scored a last-minute goal to give Croatia their first major tournament win. Twelve years later at Euro 2008, Turkey would eliminate Croatia from the tournament after beating them in the quarterfinals through a shootout. Four years later during the Euro 2012 qualifiers, Croatia beat Turkey 3-0. Eight years after that, Croatia’s Luka Modrić gave them a 1-0 win.
