Ukraine secures a 2-1 victory over Sweden in extra time
In the most lowkey match of the Round of 16, Ukraine and Sweden managed to play an excellent game of football because it went down to the wire. The game was tied 1-1 after 90 minutes which prompted extra time and Ukraine scored in the last gasp of the match.
This was the first time since 2012 when Sweden and Ukraine met in an official game. That was during the group stage of the European Championships and it was Ukraine who took the victory. It looks like history repeated itself because Ukraine once again took the victory over the Swedes.
Ukraine was the first one to score when Oleksandr Zinchenko found some space and knocked the ball into the net. The Swedes would then equalize just before halftime. The score stayed at 1-1- for a long time until extra time when Artem Dovbyk stepped up as the hero for Ukraine by scoring the match-winning strike at the 121st-minute mark.
A fantastic performance from Ukraine
This was a great game for both teams but it was Ukraine that took the victory. The stats were almost all equal since they had a similar amount of shots on target and possession was split 45 to 55%. That is a small difference and you can see both teams wanted the win with the energy that they used to play.
A game-changing event during the late stages was a Sweden red card which left them with only 10 men to play out the last 20 minutes. This set the stage for the last-minute winner for Ukraine because the player who was sent off was a defender who could’ve stuck a leg out to stop the attack. The red card was warranted because the defender made a nightmarish challenge.
Why Ukraine vs England will be awesome
With Ukraine and England set for a match on the 3rd of July, fans should be excited about the upcoming game. This will be a slugfest on both ends of the pitch because the players are all talented and hungry to perform at a high level.
The Three Lions had a convincing 2-0 win over Germany before Ukraine’s result. This means Ukraine already has a sense of what they will take in their next match. While Ukraine loves to bomb forward using pace and power, England likes to step back and take the game at a slower pace with their defensive style.
This will be an exciting game but Ukraine has to be the team that steps up aggressively because England will be happy with how they play. They will be patient under Gareth Southgate’s guidance and their defence will be the main factor that they will rely on to win the game.
It will be a massively important game on the 3rd of July at the Stadio Olimpico for both teams.
