Who Has Been Watford's Best Player This Season?

In a turbulent season that had two manager changes and a fierce battle to avoid relegation, there have been bright spots on the roster for Watford this season.

These are some players that have performed really well for Watford this season. Although they have had a rough season, their players have done their best to keep the team afloat.

Of course, there are players like Troy Deeney who have contributed to Watford’s positives this season. But the players listed here have been the catalysts to Watford’s successes this season.

Ben Foster

The veteran goalkeeper has been consistently playing well this season. It is fair to say that he has anchored the Watford defence throughout the season. He had 10 clean sheets so far this season and had heroic performances.

He has garnered interest from other clubs because he is a very reliable and consistent goalkeeper. As with many of his teammates, his best performance came against Liverpool. He had a spectacular stretch where he blocked both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané’s attempts on the goal.

Christian Kabasele

Kabasele as a defender has been instrumental in Watford’s victory throughout the Premier League season. As a defender, he does not really garner much attention from fans. But he has been a consistent wall for the Hornets’ defence. In Watford’s 10 clean sheets this season, eight of them heavily involve Kabasele.

His overall impact on the team is not obvious to the naked eye, but when he sits out matches, you can clearly see his importance to the team. Watford has had nine matches wherein Kabasele played limited minutes or did not play at all. They lost all those nine matches.

Etienne Capoue

The midfielder has been an excellent orchestrator for Watford’s offence this season. He is often overlooked but when his name is called, he has been great. He has dished out two assists this season, but his main strength is that he gives precise passes to his teammates. He has an 82.5% success rate when it comes to passes.

Capoue was already impressive during the times when Garcia and Flores were the managers for the team, but under Pearson, Capoue has emerged as one of the most important players in the Watford lineup.

Ismaïla Sarr

Sarr was sparingly used under the two previous managers Javi Garcia and Quique Sanchez Flores. In Nigel Pearson’s offence, Sarr has become Watford’s star player. Ever since Pearson arrived, he has been involved in eight goals in eight games.

Unfortunately, he missed some time in the middle of the season due to a hamstring injury that sidelined him for about a month and a half. During the time that he was sidelined, the Hornets struggled to score goals because they were missing Sarr’s abilities to create goal opportunities for himself and his teammates.

He was flying under the radar in the eyes of people who were casually watching Watford matches. But in the match against Liverpool, he came out with a spectacular performance. Scoring two goals and assisting on a third, he garnered worldwide recognition. The victory over Liverpool is the Reds’ only loss in the Premier League this season, and you can attribute that loss to one man, in particular, Ismaïla Sarr.
