Who is the favourite in the European Championships Group D?
Group D is filled with one of the most popular groups in the European Championships. England is the favourite but other teams can compete. With the likes of Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Scotland, England has some stiff competition in the event.
England is the favourite to win this group by far. This is since Croatia has fallen off from their perch as a top-two team since their World Cup final berth in 2018. The Three Lions retained their core from their semifinals run in the latest World Cup and they’re even more experienced now.
The Scots and Czechs are not favoured to win the group but they have the potential to shock the other two teams. It will be interesting to see how this group will play out considering the two ‘weaker’ teams will be motivated to perform better to keep up with the powerhouses England and Croatia.
Why England is the favourite to win this group
Ever since their 2018 run, people have observed England’s development through the years. They still have the winning core from that run but there are also some new additions to the team that have only improved the squad and their ceiling.
Harry Kane is surely the star player but you can expect some pieces on the team that can help lift them to the top tier of the squad. In 2018, Kane was seen as the only reliable star. However, you can expect that other players can step up on a similar level with the likes of Phil Foden and Jack Grealish entering the squad and possibly turn the Three Lions’ fortunes around.
Their defence is also solid this time around with the likes of John Stones and Reece James. They are high-level performers who just played in the Champions League final for Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
Gareth Southgate has some challenges in the event but he has to make sure to hold onto that favourite status because there is a chance that they will underperform. They need to realize England is one of the best teams in the world and playing badly will only hurt their morale for the long term.
Can England be stopped in Group D?
Croatia is the best bet to stop England’s run to winning the group. They are a proven squad with a history of beating England back in 2018. However, one of their players Ivan Rakitić is a big loss for the team this season due to his departure from international duties in 2020.
Scotland has a well-documented history with England and they have the potential to surprise their neighbours. Andy Robertson is the star of the team and since he plays for Liverpool, he is familiar with all of the players on the England squad. If he can keep this up, you can expect he can surprise the Three Lions.
The Czech Republic is a tough team to gauge but they can play at a high level. Tomáš Souček is the star of the show and since he plays for West Ham United, he is also familiar with this team. Hopefully, they can pull off surprises so this is not a one-man team in Group D. It will be one of the most exciting groups in recent football history since every team here is strong.
