Why CR7 is still the best player in the European Championships
Portugal is a dark horse to repeat as a European Championships winner. With Cristiano Ronaldo as their best player, anything is possible with this team. So far, CR7 has proven he’s still worthy of being called the top star in the sport.
As the only player who has played in five European Championships, CR7 is familiar with how this event goes on. Considering that he led the team to a win in this event in 2016, you should expect him to go on another classic run towards the trophy.
They are not favoured to win the event this time around because Belgium and France look like the best teams in the world. However, if there’s a team that can pull off another upset, Portugal should be the main choice. They have a good team and a superstar who can take them over the edge when the pressure gets higher.
Why CR7 is still the best player in the tournament
European events are one of the barometers to see the best players in the world. Europe tends to have the best players in the world except for the South American stars. Since Lionel Messi plays for Argentina, CR7 is the biggest name in Europe right now.
At 36 years of age, Ronaldo continues to improve as a player. That is an amazing fact since Ronaldo is already one of the best players of all time. In this event so far, he has remained the icon for Portugal as he scored a brace in their first game of the group stage against Hungary.
The Juve star is well-known for how he elevates himself when he plays for his country. As the star who steps up to the occasion, it is valuable that he keeps playing on the big stage and he helps Portugal win trophies. He does something similar when he plays for his clubs as evidenced by his run with Madrid, Manchester United, and Juve.
As a goal scorer, Ronaldo is unmatched as he holds the record for most goals scored by a pro ever. Since he’s not slowing down anytime soon, hopefully, people can realize he’s still considered the best player in the world.
CR7 is still Portugal’s main man
Football fans tend to change their tune quickly when it comes to star players. Since Bruno Fernandes broke into the scene as the star midfielder for Man United, he has also drawn more fans to Portugal’s games. Of course, they would quickly realize it’s not Bruno’s team because Ronaldo is still there and is still their best performer.
CR7 himself admits there have been some obstacles in his career but he’s done his best to overcome them for club and country.
‘I’m not the same player I was at18 or 10 years ago or five years ago, but we keep adjusting’, he said. ‘The most intelligent thing about a football player is the ability to adjust, and I’m more mature than I was before. If a player wants to play for many many years they must adjust. My numbers speak for themselves. From 18 to 36 I’ve learnt to adjust, adapt and I‘ve always been able to win. I have adjusted all along in my career’.
His way of adapting to the evolving game is impressive and needs to be recognized. It will be hard to dethrone CR7 as the star for Portugal and it won’t come anytime soon.
