Why Donny van de Beek needs to take advantage of his minutes
Donny van de Beek was always the black sheep of the Manchester United squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Now, he needs to take advantage of his newfound minutes under interim manager Michael Carrick and the backroom staff for the rest of the 2021-22 season.
In the Reds’ 1-4 loss to Watford, seldom-used van de Beek and Jadon Sancho impressed despite their embarrassment. Sancho looked lively in the attacking squad as he played 92 of the 95 minutes of the match. When the Reds were down 0–2, the young Englishman made an accurate cross to Cristiano Ronaldo who then made the right pass to van de Beek who scored the sole goal.
It was poetic that van de Beek scored the final goal of the Ole era since he misused the Dutch midfielder in the past two seasons. Van de Beek is known as one of the best Dutch players of the past few years but he was rarely used in the Man United squad. It was disappointing because most fans knew the midfielder has the skill set to stand out in the Premier League.
Van de Beek can fix the issues in the midfield
Ole’s indecisiveness was a big issue for the Reds as he failed to put van de Beek in the rotation. This was not exclusive to the Dutch star because Dean Henderson also lost his first-choice goalkeeper spot this season. Back in the 2020-21 season, Dean secured the number one spot but due to a bout with illness, the top GK spot has been given back to David de Gea.
With Carrick at the helm, van de Beek has the chance to stand out in the midfield. The coach will have to find a way to use van de Beek better alongside elite midfielders like Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. If he can balance it out with a new formation like a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2, you can expect Man United to improve significantly.
Van de Beek is the type of player who can raise a team’s floor and ceiling. He was extremely good for Ajax before he made the move to Manchester.
Van de Beek will have to prove himself
Van de Beek was seen as the strongest player on the bench alongside Sancho in the past few weeks of Ole’s regime. With a considerable amount of hype, van de Beek needs to live up to the fans’ expectations of him. He has been hyped to no end as the solution to the midfield and he has to perform at a high level.
Van de Beek has to prove himself to be given minutes. It will be a rough time for him and the rest of the Reds squad if they fail to live up to the hype when they weren’t playing under Ole’s system.
