Why Minamino should return to the Saints on a permanent deal
With Takumi Minamino’s Liverpool future in doubt, there is a big chance that his 2020-21 loan deal with Southampton will turn into a permanent transfer. It will be a big transfer for the Saints since Taki was not given the chance to shine for the Reds.
When it comes to individual skill, Taki is one of the best players in the Liverpool squad. However, there are too many talented players ahead of him in the rotation with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, and even Diogo Jota taking the majority of the minutes.
Taki needs to showcase his skills since he won’t get the chance to play for the Reds. The Saints will give him the chance to shine. He will fit in well in the Saints system and it seems like Ralph Hasenhüttl wants him on the lineup. His link-up play with the likes of Danny Ings and Ché Adams will also be amplified.
Hasenhüttl wants him on the team
As much as Jürgen Klopp wants to have Taki on his team, there is just no room for him to shine on the Liverpool squad. A large group of people still believe in Taki finding his form and turning into one of the best players in the Premier League. Hasenhüttl is in that group since he believes the Japanese star is primed for a breakout.
‘The most important thing for him is that he gets a chance to play’, the Saints coach said. ‘We had so much rotation with injuries and everything that it was clear he would get a lot of game time with us’.
‘We have had talks with them and they are not so sure what will happen with him because Liverpool may make some things happen in the market’, Hasenhüttl continued. ‘For him, it was important to play here. We gave him that chance to play and we have enjoyed having him here’.
If Taki has shown he loves playing for the Saints, you can expect him to make the move if and when he becomes available in the transfer market. It will be tough to see him go for the Reds but it is a necessary move that will help all of the parties involved.
It’s up to the Saints to use Taki well
Taki can play any role in the front three which is the biggest positive of having him in a lineup. Of course, some people will say he does not have a defined role which can be seen as a negative. However, in Hasenhüttl’s system, you can expect there will be some moving pieces and players but the priority should be Taki.
Even Klopp admits Taki moving to Liverpool was bad for his growth since he was the star of RB Salzburg and he then rode the bench for the majority of his Reds stint.
‘Opportunities at that time had been short with us and therefore going to play somewhere else made sense for him and us’, Klopp said. ‘Southampton was perfect because of how Ralph plays and what he demands from his players’.
The Saints are primed for a big 2021-22 season. If they can play at a high level for an entire campaign, you can expect Taki will be a big part of that. Hopefully, Taki can get the chance to shine for a team that wants him and that should be Southampton under the guidance of one of the most underrated coaches in England.
