Why re-signing Leon Goretzka is huge for Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich just announced they re-signed midfielder Leon Goretzka to a contract extension up to 2026. Goretzka’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2022 which is why it was important to re-sign him now. Let’s dive into why this is huge for the Bavarians.
Goretzka joined Bayern from Schalke back in 2018 and he has been successful ever since. He has won three Bundesliga titles at just 26 years of age. It also helps that he’s such a vital cog to their system because he’s a key player in the midfield. Since he wants to win for the rest of his career, re-signing with Bayern was the obvious choice for Goretzka.
The 26-year-old addressed the extension. He said, ‘We've won everything there is to win over the past three years. But what would be even better than winning titles is confirming and repeating these successes. We want to build on this in the coming years’.
Goretzka is one of Bayern’s stalwarts
In a club that has the likes of Thomas Müller, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, and Robert Lewandowksi, Goretzka is often in the background. However, fans should realize how important Goretzka is to their team’s success. He is a powerful player who has a rock-solid body. This bodes well for his defensive assignments since he has to play both offence and defence.
When he does have the ball in an attacking position, you can expect him to overwhelm his matchup using his body. Even if he has a strong body, you can still see him play with finesse especially with his touch. He is a good mix of physical strength and finesse which is a great combo.
Goretzka is Bayern’s anchor which is a massive role. Bayern is the biggest club in Germany and they are always top dogs in the Champions League. He fills in a role that people don’t like to play because it has so many tasks. Goretzka fully embraces his role as one of Bayern’s stalwarts and he will continue to do so for years to come.
Bayern values Goretzka highly
Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić made it a priority to re-sign Goretzka. He knows that the midfielder is key to their success and it would’ve been such a huge loss if he left on a free transfer. Now that they re-signed him, the front office is pleased with the squad.
Hasan talked about why this was such a crucial move. He said, ‘I'm very happy we'll be working together for the next five years. Leon is a source of energy on and off the pitch. He has great technique and dynamism and is a particularly dangerous midfielder who can decide games’.
Kimmich and Goretzka will play alongside each other for Bayern and Germany for a long time and it helps that they will always play together on the same squad.
