2020 Global StarCraft II League: Code S’ Semifinals Is Set

The quarterfinals have concluded with some upsets with Dark and Maru being eliminated. Now the stage is set for a Terran trio and a sole Protoss player.

Most fans and pundits expected the quarterfinals to end in predictable fashion but there were a lot of surprises. Jun ‘TY’ Tae Yang was not favoured to win his series against Park ‘Dark’ Ryung-Woo.

TY had an abysmal record against Dark, with only six wins and 20 losses in the current patch. But he managed to shock the world by sweeping his rival three to zero. TY had a great strategy with timely rushes in each game of the series leading to Dark unable to defend his base.

The other upset in the bracket was with Won ‘PartinG’ Lee Sak and Cho ‘Maru’ Seong Ju. The latter is considered one of the best players in the history of the game.

PartinG managed to come up with the victory after a competitive series. He managed to read the situation perfectly in the last game en route to the victory. Maru had a significant advantage in the latter stages but PartinG made a timely counter-attack that led to his victory.

On the other side of the bracket, the two favourites won their series. Kim ‘Cure’ Doh Wook easily swept Baek ‘Dear’ Dong Jun three games to none. This marked a return to form for Cure because this is his first Code S semifinals for the first time since 2016.

Cure used traditional strategies managing to build up his units and then he overwhelmed Dear with an immense number of units.

Lastly, tournament favourite Lee ‘INnoVation’ Shin Hyung barely scraped through his opponent in Cho ‘Trap’ Sung Ho. This was an interesting series because these two are former teammates.

This was the best series of the tournament with the first four games all having climactic endings. Some fans were disappointed with the fifth game because it was a one-sided game for INnoVation.

The semifinals are set with TY taking on PartinG and Cure going against INnoVation. The best-of-seven semis will be held on the 27th of May.
