Is the StarCraft series not a priority for Blizzard anymore?

Blizzard is a big developer in the industry. They are most known for their catalogue but there are some rumours that StarCraft is no longer a priority for the devs. It is a shame given that it is the game that helped them reach the pinnacle of the industry.

In the past few years, Blizzard has not released a new update for StarCraft II. Their last game in the series was back in 2017 with StarCraft: Remastered. This was not even a new instalment as it was a new version of SC: Brood War which was the first game in the series.

This was a game that truly captured the attention of old school players because some saw SCII as an inferior game to Brood War. That was the last update in the series which infers that Blizzard does not want to support their landmark series. Of course, there may be plans behind the scenes but it looks like the devs are focused on other titles.

Is there a market for RTS games?

There is a trend in the past decade that real-time strategy games are not strong enough in the market. However, this can be attributed to Blizzard’s lack of support for their two series that centred around RTS gameplay. Both Warcraft and StarCraft’s games have been lacklustre as SC gets some small releases but they are not enough to draw people in.

On the other hand, the Warcraft series has not had a release in the main series for a long time. There was Warcraft III: Reforged but that was once again a new version of a game that was big back in the day. This series has continued its focus on its MMORPG title World of Warcraft and it seems that plans for a game in the main series will not happen given that WoW still has so many players.

Blizzard tried to breach the MOBA market that is dominated by Dota 2 and League of Legends. Their answer was Heroes of the Storm which is a similar game to the other two. However, Blizzard was unable to beat those two games which led to HotS’ main devs leaving. It still gets some small updates from time to time but it is over.

Will there be progress for the series?

It is unlikely that Blizzard will release the third game in the StarCraft series anytime soon. They pulled their support for SC II in late-2020 just like HotS. However, Blizzard is known to surprise people during BlizzCon. It will be the place where they will announce something about SC.

The 2021 edition of the event did not have an SC section which means that there will be no news for the next year. 2022 will be a big year for Blizzard as they already have some games lined up in their other series like Diablo and WoW.

If Blizzard releases the third game in the series, you can expect that fans will flock to SC again and the market for RTS games will surely thrive from it as well. In the meantime, it is only speculation as SCII and SC: Remastered are the only active games now.

Hopefully, Blizzard can update the fans with a new game in the series or another expansion because people have clamoured for new content for a long while now. It will benefit everyone, especially the loyal fan base that they have created over the past two decades.
