Should StarCraft be credited for esports’ growth over the years?
StarCraft has been spearheading the esports industry over the past two decades. Modern fans have questioned StarCraft’s influence on the esports industry. Let’s talk about StarCraft's value on the industry in its lifespan as a top esports game.
As a top real-time strategy game, StarCraft has been a landmark game for both its genre and the esports industry. While it’s not popular at the moment, it has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry. It is often credited for esports’ growth over the years because it was the first true esports game that broke through.
Nowadays, you can see so many esports around the world. The top two esports at the moment are influenced by StarCraft. League of Legends and Dota 2 are in the MOBA genre which is a successor to RTS games like StarCraft. You can look at MOBA games’ past and see that the first game of its kind was made for the first StarCraft. It was then popularized in Warcraft III with Defense of the Ancients.
StarCraft deserves the recognition
Do not believe the modern fans that do not recognize StarCraft as a top esports game. They have proven that they deserve recognition in the past two decades. They were the prototype that everyone followed with their international tournaments. Their tourney formats and media coverage was a big deal.
Now, you can log on to Twitch and see tournaments for any esports game under the sun. StarCraft was a big hit in the early 2000s, especially in South Korea. It became a big part of their culture because events were being broadcast on television. That was huge for the gaming industry back then and it kickstarted the esports craze we know today.
Now, you can see esports events being held around the world that even have multi-million dollar prize pools. That was unheard of back in the day. However, the gaming industry has grown to the point that esports can do this almost every week.
There will be no esports scene without StarCraft
StarCraft created grounds for the esports scene. Nowadays, millions of people watch the games every day and it’s all because StarCraft served as the catalyst. Modern fans need to appreciate what StarCraft has to offer because they are still the standard for most esports.
This game proved esports is the industry where gamers can show their special skills in their preferred title. As prominent esports commentator Sean ‘Day’ Plott talked about StarCraft, he said, ‘StarCraft requires the dexterity of a pianist, the mind of a chess grandmaster and the discipline of a (Summer Games) trainee’.
That kind of focus and dedication came from StarCraft and it has influenced so many players in other games. If you’re looking for the origin, StarCraft should be credited for its hand in developing the industry over the years.
