Why India is a strong front for table tennis

While cricket is the main sport for India, table tennis is on the rise in the nation. The success of many players in the recent tourneys and even the Tokyo Games have given table tennis a lot of success in many years of action in India.

Aside from the top Indian stars who have brought pride to the country in table tennis, the game has a bigger reach as most top sports do in the nation. Table tennis is also played in many schools and there are a lot of competitions held on either the inter-state or even national level.

Table tennis has appealed to the young side of many sports enthusiasts. The game has proved to be a huge part of Indian culture and its rise as a prime sport in the nation has turned a lot of heads over the years.

This is what makes India a strong front for table tennis. The sport is gaining a lot of traction because of the success from their top players.

India has a long history in table tennis

Table tennis was invented in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the first half of the 20th century that it was brought to India. To begin with, the sport was just a pastime for British officers in the country.

The Brits even led the game for a long time until India had its own table tennis federation, which played a huge role to bring the talents of Indian table tennis players into the fold. The Table Tennis Federation of India led to more organised games all the way to the present day. TTFI became an active member of the International Table Tennis Federation as well.

Since then, the TTFI has promoted and improved the status of the sport in India. A number of table tennis greats were soon born thanks to the efforts of the TTFI.

India’s success in the tourneys is a huge factor

India has won a lot of table tennis tourneys over the years. The nation is seen as one of the top nations to play against, and being a consistent winner showed they can contend against the best teams in the world.

One of the biggest wins by India was when they cruised for a finish in the 12th spot in the World Championships in Gothenburg. Their success soon gave them a chance to be one of the lucky hosts for the event and they did it three times now.

The rise of many top players in the modern era of the game also pushed the nation to a lot of success in the past few years. They have done a great job even in the Tokyo Games which sets the bar for their level of play.

Perhaps India’s success will be seen as a strong part of the sport’s story. Their big wins have given the nation a bigger name in table tennis and fans can even expect more from their players to bring honour to the nation. The support they give means a lot to the growth of table tennis as one of the leading sports in India for the next few years to come.
